As a seventeen year old boy living in America, many different things and people have crossed my path to make and shape who I am today. Most people would say that their friends and family have shaped who they've become. However, I would not say that it's the people that I associate with, but the experiences I accumulate with people that I associate with that shape me. In every instant, every moment, a lesson can be learned and can shape a person. In my life, the forces that have shaped who I am lie near and dear to my heart. To begin with, I think it goes without saying that both my mother and father have played huge roles in my life. My mother has always taught me to life close to the edge, but to always keep yours whits about you. My father, on the other hand, has shown me that being a behind the scenes kind of person will take you far in life. Many times on a daily basis will I see myself following my mothers way, by pushing the envelope and asking the question "why?". In the same way, I do see my fathers mannerisms in what I do. When I see people who are too proud for their own good, I can only thank my father for not allowing me to make a fool of myself. Not only my parents, but my grandparents as well, have been key to shaping who I am. My grandma on my fathers side has always taught me to be a loving, caring, kind, and gentle person. She never once told me this, however she leads by example. My fathers father, has shaped me in to being a very hard worker. He too has led by example, in that he is a 77 year old man who is retired, but holds positions in many local charities and is responsible for keeping charge of a summer camp. In this he has taught me to set goals and to never give up. Throughout my life, both of my brothers have helped shape who I am today. My eldest brother, Joel is an extremely curious and adventurous person. In all that he does, he desires to learn, learn, and learn some more. When he has a question about something, he looks it up and reads into it. He has shown me that learning and acquiring knowledge is a vital key to being successful in life. Although Joel has taught me much, Tommy, my other brother, has introduced worlds to me. All the time people say that we are more alike than peas in a pod, but i know for a fact that I still have much to learn from him. He has shown me that with a little hard work, anything is possible. In the past year, he has lived in 2 countries outside of the U.S., traveled to over 10 countries, and crossed over the border of 35 states, all for about $2,000. His work ethic is phenomenal and everything he does is sheer genius. He has shown me that working hard and a little bit of sucking up can get you an incredibly long way. Three of my closest friends, Zac Smith, Mijamin Friend, and Oliver Devin Lippy have contributed to who I am today. I have known Miji since 5th grade, and we've been best friends ever since. Along the way we have matured together in many ways. He helped me through many tough times whether it were failed middle school relationships or just being a good friend. Miji has shown me that there are good people in this world. Zac and I have been friends for about two years now, but I feel as though we've known each other our entire lives. He has helped me through many tough times and I am proud to call him my brother. Zac hasn't had the easiest life, but no matter what he's always kept his head up and persevered through it. He's shaped me and made me a stronger person by not allowing the little things to get me down. Devin and I have been best friends since freshman year of highschool where we had many classes together. Devin always seems to find the silver lining in things. No matter the situation, he has a positive manner about him. On my darkest of days, I try think of what Devin does, realize that life really is what you make it, and if you make it fun then it will be fun. Together, the three of them and I have such a strong bond that no one could break, which again proves to me that real friends do exist. This past year during volleyball season I had very high expectations. I had the idea that I would be on the starting team, however I was not. The head coach did not believe in me, just yet. Todd Goodling, one of the assistant coaches told me that all I needed to do was to keep working and fine tuning my skills. With his help, by the end of the season I not only was able to accomplish my goal of a starting position, but we were able to win a state title. Without Todd's motivation, I would have given up and gotten no where. Todd showed me that no matter how much work you think you have done, you can still improve and reach far higher goals than you could imagine. Even with all of these people changing, shaping, and altering me, one person has made a bigger impact than I could have ever imagined. Brooke Ann Heilman and I have been dating for over a year now, and ever since we've been together I am a new person. In all that I do, I am a more happy person and more pleasant to be around. She has shown me that life is all about the long run. She has shown me that life is not about ourselves, but about others. She has shown me that I have no reason to be anyone but me. Any facade I put up to please others isn't necessary. If people cannot handle the real me, then they have no place in my life anyway. Lastly, but most certainly not least, is my relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus has shaped me, and is constantly changing me into the person that He wants me to be. All in all, He has made me a better person than I was yesterday, because I have put all of my trust in Him.
